    Historical Overview

Founded in 1893, Pendleton First Christian Church is a congregation affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Our denomination's roots began in an era known as the "Restoration Movement" of our nation's history. From its start in the early 1800's on the American frontier, our denomination began as an effort to overcome the sectarianism that so plagued the American churches.

From the earliest leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to this very day, Disciples hold unity among Christians as a high priority for congregational and denominational life. Holding dear to Jesus' prayer as recorded in the Gospel of John 17:20-21, members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) continue to strive to bring unity among the many diverse branches of the Christian faith. In keeping with this ideal, our congregation works cooperatively with other congregations -- both within and outside of our denomination -- for cooperation in ministry and in worship.

Our past has given us a rich heritage, and our present is leading us into a spirited future of faith, service and deepening community.
